Early Georgian Walnut Stick Barometer
It is very rare to see a genuine stick barometer dating from the middle of the 18th century as these instruments did not become popular until 40 years later and very unusual to find one in such genuine, original and complete condition.
Although unsigned (as is often the case with such instruments ) it can be dated by the design and construction. The silvered scales as well engraved but cruder than later instruments. On the rear of the plates obvious signs of beating the scales flat can be seen..
The cistern cover is particularly pleasing and is totally original. It has developed the most wonderful patina and colour
Having studied the timber used to make this barometer I am of the opinion that it is made of solid walnut which has a reddish hue but the grain and colour differ from mahogany although it would certainly match well with Georgian antique furniture.
Since acquiring the instrument I have been particularly thoughtful of preserving , rather than restoring , the instrument and this has been limited to a gentle clean and wax . The tube has been cleaned and re filled to ensure functionality.
I love the condition as it is with its wonderful colour and patina whilst preserving its great age.
As with any item 250 years old there are the odd age related marks but the overall condition is excellent and ready to go straight into the home.
The scales are a little pitted and the silvering is a little rubbed The very old tube has at some time been replaced as can be expected
The images give a reasonable depiction of the instrument but I suggest that any interested parties view the item as they will certainly not be disappointed.
The barometer is 37 inches long and 3inches wide at the centre
If the asking price is paid in full I will deliver and set up the barometer free of charge in England , Wales and the Scottish lowlands.
If a lesser offer is accepted it will be considered a trade sale with the item being sold as described and shipping the responsibility of the buyer.
I will ship this instrument worldwide but I will have to empty the tube and retain the mercury although re filling the tube is a very straightforward process.
Guesstimate shipping rates are as follows
Europe £40
USA £70
Asia and Australia £140
