1869 Sewill silver full hunter fusee pocket watch
An antique silver fusee pocket watch by J Sewill of Liverpool, 1869.
Joseph Sewill was born in 1800. He set up business as a watch maker in Duncan Street in Liverpool in 1839, moving to South Castle Street in 1845. They had an outlet in Cornhill, London which was managed by John Sewill, Joseph's son, and eventually another branch in Glasgow managed by the younger son Frank. The company of Joseph Sewill of Liverpool was one of the most famous watch, chronometer and nautical instrument makers of 19th Century Liverpool.
This particular watch has a fusee movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed J Sewill, 61 South Castle Street, Liverpool. The movement is protected by a fitted inner cover.
The watch itself measures 50mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the covers for London 1869, with a maker's mark for Joseph Sewill. This mark was registered in 1862. The case has a a few slight indentations but otherwise is in good condition. Originally the case would have had engine turned detail but over the years this has worn away leaving only traces.
The button on the end of the stem pushes in to release the front cover. Inside, the watch glass is in good condition.
The dial looks good to the naked eye. If viewed closely, there are some fine hairline cracks to the subsidiary seconds dial and some below the sub dial.
The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE.
Please contact us for international shipping prices.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
