Watercolour of Ballyholme Bay by Peter Ghent watercolour landscape Ballyholme %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A fine and wonderfully bright watercolour by the artist Peter Ghent RCA 1857-1911. The work depicts a view across Ballyholme Bay near Bangor in Northern Ireland. It is Summertime and the wheatsheaves are piled in the field giving the most wonderful contrast between the gold of the wheat and blue of the sky. The work is signed to the lower left and inscribed with the title on the reverse which is: Looking across Ballyholme Bay. Peter Ghent was born in Liverpool and spent most of his life there except for a short time in Conway, North Wales. It was a short trip by sea over to Northern Ireland which he must have done to create this work. He exhibited extensively mainly at The Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, as one might expect, where he showed 60 times, but also at The Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, and The Royal Cambrian Academy where he exhibited 81 works and was elected a full member. Two of his landscapes are in the collection of The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. This work is mounted in what is likely the original gilt frame which has been overgilt at some point. This is a great decorative work by a highly accomplished artist and is in absolutely wonderful condition with the colours as bright and true as could possibly ever be. C.1900.
