Watercolour by James Bateman RA RA Academy watercolour %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A James Bateman RA RWS RE (1893 - 1959) watercolour.

This watercolour picture is signed by James Bateman in the lower right corner and is dated 1922, the year after he finished training at the Slade School of Art. It is not titled but depicts a lady on wooden steps preaching to a crowd, with two nuns in their habits and a man with his head bowed. Some of the crown are listening to her and others are listening to another preacher. Obviously a serious picture as it is not highly coloured but atmospheric.

It is in good condition, and the frame measures 40cms by 22.5cms.
On the reverse is an old label from Boots picture framing department and a written precis of the life of James Bateman.

James Bateman was born in Kendal, the son of a blacksmith, in 1893. He was a both a distinguished painter and wood engraver. He studied at the Leeds School of Art from 1910 until 1914, then the Royal College of Art from 1914 to 1919 and the Slade School of Art from 1919 until 1921. During his studies he gained much repute and was a finalist in the Prix de Rome in 1920.

He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1924 onwards and was made a full member of the academy in 1942. He was also a member of the New English Art Club, the Cheltenham Group and the Cotswold Group of artists.
