We are delighted to offer for sale this beautiful, large, 19th Century pastel by the artist W. B. Slavesse. The pastel is entitled on the mount and dated there 1899. As we haven't removed the pastel from the frame, we have to rely on the details on the mount for the attribution, as there is no visible signature.

The pastel depicts a group of red deer on a rocky hillside with gnarled and leafless trees, the whole covered with a blanket of thick snow. The artist has executed the deer in a masterly fashion, please see the photographs for a closer view.

We have been unable to find any biographical information about the artist in any of our reference books, but, judging by the name he may not have been British.

The pastel is mounted with washlines and is framed in a very nice 1 3/4" swept gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
