Victorian Silver Toast Rack, Atkin Bros, 1892
Here we have a smart late Victorian Sterling Silver 4 Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack is oblong with rounded corners standing on four bun feet. The dividers are loaf shaped whilst the handle is heart shaped with a flower finial.
The toast rack is made in Sheffield by the noted silversmiths Atkin Brothers and dates to 1892. The firm traced its origin back to Thomas Law around 1750 with his grandson Joseph taking Henry Atkin as partner in 1824. Atkin took sole control in 1840 and the firm remained under the management of the Atkin family until they were bought by C.J. Vander in 1958.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, the dividers all securely attached and just the very slightest rock when it is stood on a hard flat surface. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack is 9.2cm / 3.6ins long, 6.3cm / 2.5ins wide and stands 8.1cm / 3.2ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 78.9g / 2.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on one end of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter Z for 1892 and the HA makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the toast rack.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
