Victorian Silver Cream Jug, Thomas Hayes, 1892
This is a charming late Victorian Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The cream jug is of bulbous form on a flat circular base with a broad pouring lip and a scroll handle decorated with a central rib. This simplicity is typical of the Arts & Crafts style that was very popular at this time.
The cream jug was made in Birmingham by silversmith Thomas Hayes and dates to 1892. Thomas Hayes was active in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter between 1887 and the early 1900s producing a wide range of tableware, homeware and personal items.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 9.5cm / 3.7ins from lip to handle, 6.4cm / 2.5ins across the body and stands 6.4cm / 2.5ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 54.3g / 1.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter s for 1892 and the T H makers' mark for Thomas Hayes.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
