Victorian Large Silver Matchbox Holder, B'ham 1900
This is an elegant large late Victorian Sterling Silver Matchbox Holder. The holder would have been to sit on a table or mantlepiece, not to go into a pocket. The lid of the holder has an embossed design of scrolls and flowers surrounding a central blank cartouche. The body is open on all sides to reveal the strike on the matchbox and to have the drawer pushed open. It stands on four ball feet.
The matchbox holder was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Crisford & Norris and dates to 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's long reign. Harold Crisford & William Norris established their business in 1896 at premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They are best known for their good quality and well designed small items for personal use, novelty baby rattles, pin cushions and stylish powder compacts. They remained in business up until around 1970.
Whilst the holder has clearly been used it remains in very good condition with just some slight misshaping to the front opening plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The matchbox holder is 7.5cm / 2.9ins by 5cm / 1.9ins and stands 3.5cm / 1.4ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 35.1g / 1.24oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the front rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter a for 1900 and the C & N makers' mark for Crisford & Norris.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
