Victorian Doulton / Royles Self Pouring Teapot Victorian Teapot Royles %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a great example of Victorian ingenuity in everyday life. The Royle's Patent Self Pouring Teapot was invented by John James Royle and patented in 1886. Royle was an industrialist in Manchester who's company made radiators, water heaters, domestic boilers etc. He designed the teapot as a promotional item for his customers in the mid-1880s. It proved to be so popular with the recipients that Royle patented the design and commissioned Doulton in Burslem to do a manufacturing run of a few thousand to sell. James Dixon & Sons in Sheffield were also commissioned to make an all metal version although these were much less popular.

The teapot has a sieve in the bottom. The tea leaves are put in followed by the boiling water. The deep lid has a hole in the finial and by putting your thumb over this and then pushing the lid down into the pot the air pressure forces the water through the tea leaves and out through the spout without having to lift up the pot and pour.

Doulton made the teapot in a variety of patterns in the 1890s and this one is in a Cherry Blossom pattern on a cream ground with bamboo ribbing and gold trim. The push down lid is silver plated with a bakelite finial so that it doesn't get too hot when placing your thumb over the hole.

Condition is very good with no chips or cracks in the teapot and no significant plate loss to the lid. There is just one small spot on the finial where the black finish of the bakelite has worn away revealing the white underneath. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

This is a good size family teapot standing 22.5cm / 8.8ins high and being 23.5cm / 9.2ins from spout to handle. It weighs in at 1.13kg / 39.8oz.

The base of the teapot is stamped "Royles Patent Self Pouring. No.6327, 1886. Manufactured by Doulton's Burslem for J.J. Royle Manchester"
