Superb pair of drawings by Charles Walter Simpson pair drawings churches %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A very interesting and visually decorative pair of drawings by highly regarded artist Charles Walter Simpson (1885-1971). The pair show two churches and each have a title:
‘Whitchurch, where Handel played’
‘Stanmore, the old and new churches’
The two are both signed: Chas Simpson and dated 03. These dates make them very early for the artist, but it was through drawing that his talent was discovered.
Charles Walter Simpson was a leading figure in the St Ives art colony in the early 1920s. Born in Surrey, Simpson was expected to follow his father into the army, but he suffered serious injury when thrown from a horse at the age of 15, the blow affecting both hearing and sight. His considerable talent for drawing led him to pursue a career in painting and he entered the Bushey School of Painting under Lucy Kemp-Welch—the great animal painter. It was in homage to another great animal painter, J. A. Arnesby Brown, that he first went to Cornwall to stay on a farm near St Erth. The move resulted in his first success at the Royal Academy in 1907—Autumn Ploughing. Later, with his wife, the portraitist Ruth Alison, he established the St Ives School of Art at the Piazza studios.
The drawings have been cleaned and the mounts replaced. The frames are the original and I have left the original Christies sale labels on from what would look like the mid twentieth century.
The pair make a great decorative statement and interesting early works by a great artist.
