ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jamieson. F. E. fl 1910-1940
-
Painter in oil and watercolour of Highland and Coastal scenes. A prolific painter who often signed with pseudonyms such as 'Phil Hips', 'Graham Williams', 'W. Richards' and 'Arnold Pienne'. His oils were most commonly Loch or Highland landscapes. He traveled widely through out the country between the wars selling his paintings. His work was often in a more traditional Victorian style and his pictures were reproduced as postcards by Ajelli and Co of London around 1920.
-
ABOUT THE LOCH
Loch Katrine is a freshwater loch and scenic attraction in the Trossachs area of the Scottish Highlands. It is also within the district of Stirling.
The loch is 13 kilometres long and 1 kilometre wide and is situated in the Trossachs National Park.
-
Katrine is from the Gaelic for “highland thief or robber.” Loch Katrine has been a holiday destination since Victorian times, when the famous steamship Sir Walter Scott, still in use today, was first launched on its waters.
-
Examples of his work are held in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Wales and Scotland.
-
ABOUT THE CASTLE
Doune Castle is a medieval stronghold near the village of Doune, in the Stirling district of central Scotland.
Doune Castle was originally built in the thirteenth century, then probably damaged in the Scottish Wars of Independence, before being rebuilt in its present form in the late 14th century by Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany (c. 1340–1420), and his stronghold has survived relatively unchanged and complete.
-
The castle passed to the crown in 1425, when Albany's son was executed, and was used as a royal hunting lodge and dower house.
In the later 16th century, Doune became the property of the Earls of Moray.
The castle saw military action during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and Glencairn's rising in the mid-17th century, and during the Jacobite risings of the late 17th & 18thc.
By 1800 the castle was ruined, but restoration works were carried out in the 1880s, prior to its passing into state care in the 20th century.
It is now maintained by Historic Environment Scotland.
