Royal Rockingham Cabinet Plate c1830-31
Something for the Rockingham porcelain collector, a rather rare Royal Rockingham porcelain cabinet plate.
This quite large Rockingham cabinet plate consists of a gadrooned moulded rim with a gilt border around 3 beautifully painted polychrome and gilt sprigs of flowers. The back of the plate carries the rare Rockingham mark of the Griffin crest over Royal Rockm Works Brameld all in puce (see the Illustrated Guide to Rockingham Pottery and Porcelain by D.G.Rice, Page 106) along with the pattern number 451 in iron red.
The plate is 10 inches (25.4cm)in diameter and is in an excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs and minimal wear to the decoration.
Royal Rockingham (1830-31)
In 1826 the 4th Earl Fitzwilliam saved the Brameld pottery works from bankruptcy, in recognition of this the factory was renamed Rockingham and the newly developed porcelain carried the red Griffin mark along with Rockingham Works Brameld in red script. The 4th Earl Fitzwilliam continued his support of Rockingham introducing an array of wealthy clients to the factories outputs. Those clients included the King, who ordered a lavish dessert service in 1830. To capitalise on this Royal accolade the Bramelds introduced new makers marks, the puce Royal Rockingham marks. The Royal Rockingham marks were only used for 1 year 1830-1831, and were were of four types 1) impressed marks over 4 lines – Royal ROCKINGHAM WORKS BRAMELD, 2) Griffin crest Royal Rockm Works Brameld in puce, 3) Griffin crest ROYAL ROCKINGHAM BRAMELD in capitals and sometimes in gold and 4) Griffin crest ROYAL ROCKINGHAM WORKS BRAMELD, sometimes in gold (see B. Bowden, "Royal Rockingham in Regency and Neo-Rococo Style". The Antique Dealers and Collectors Guide, pp 70-74, March 1977).
The Royal Rockingham marks were replaced by the standard puce Rockingham marks consisting of the griffin over Rockingham Works Brameld Manufacturer to the King written in script in 1831 following the production of the first pieces of the Royal dessert service.
The fact that the Royal Rockingham marks were only used for 1 year makes pieces carrying these marks rather rare and sought after by the informed Rockingham collector.
