Very rare Royal Copenhagen ceramic garden seat by Ivan Wiess,c1960/1970's.Ivan Weiss (born 1946) is a Danish ceramist based in Denmark. He was trained as overglaze painter at the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory from 1962 to 1966 at the age of sixteen. Apprenticed to the artistic director Nils Thorsson, Ivan obtained a great insight to the ceramic field. During the years 1970-72 Ivan studied ceramics in Hagi in Japan, where he learned to throw bowls and fire ceramics. Back in Denmark he was re-employed as a ceramist at The Royal Copenhagen, continuing his collaboration with Nils Thorsson and creating ceramics in a separate studio until 2004. Since then Ivan has worked freelance for Royal Copenhagen and as a guest lecturer at the Danish Design School.Over the course of a long career of 42 years at the Royal Copenhagen, Ivan Weiss has developed a whole range of ceramic expressions. Through different shapes, decorations and materials Ivan has created works from tiny boxes in porcelain to man-high pots in rough stoneware. The materials explored are overglaze, porcelain, earthenware and stoneware. Ivan is strongly inspired from Chinese and Japanese calligraphy, which is reflected in his works. He has exhibited in a large number of Danish museums and museums all over the world. He has contributed with large decoration assignments, for example in The Danish Center for Forest, Landscape and Planning.
