AUGUST SALE. REDUCED PRICES UNTIL THE END OF THE MONTH!

An Outstanding Pair of Salvaged Georgian-Period Columns or Pilasters.

A very rare find indeed is this wonderful pair of classical, architectural, interior pilasters or columns. Dating to around the second half of the 18th century and constructed predominantly from carved softwood, coated in gesso and with a painted and gilded finish.

Of tapering square section, with the front and each side carved in high relief depicting flower-heads, acanthus, geometric and swag motifs....all set below somewhat exaggerated, angular capitals.

The quality of the carving itself is just wonderful....the acanthus scrolling in particular is assured, fluid and very 18th century.

The pilasters are being sold 'as is'. They are entirely as found - dusty, dirty, uncleaned, displaying multiple signs of wear, chipping, distress and some loss. There is no 'recent' restoration. One of the columns has, over time, also 'twisted' slightly on its axis. There appears to be a couple of layers of different colour paint, with what seems to be an old azure blue appearing in places from beneath the later darker earthy maroon colour........however all of the paint is 'old'. The gilding is especially beautiful and possibly original, or 19th century at the latest. They exude a quiet decadence.

The decision as to the amount of restoration or 'improvement' will lie entirely with the new owner......but the potential is there. They are, by design, intended to go against a wall or backing of some kind and in their future role, I imagine them flanking a fireplace, an alcove, a staircase or simply utilised as decorative devices in their own right.

These fabulous items were deemed surplus to requirements and therefore released from a Grade 1 listed property. It is very unlikely I will find another pair quite like this for some considerable time.

I have 50+ images on file and prospective buyers are strongly encouraged to request further pictures prior to purchase.

Thank you.
