The old lady in the act of reading - usually the Bible was featured often in works by Rembrandt, Lievens and Dou and by Rembrandt's pupils from the second half of the seventeenth century, such as Ferdinand Bol, Abraham van Dijck and Nicolaes Maes. The model is thought to portray the prophetess Hannah, paragon of virtue and piety .
Pieter Christoffel Wonder exhibited genre pictures at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. He was largely self-taught, although between 1802 and 1804 he attended classes at the academy in Düsseldorf. In 1807 he established the Kunstliefde (Love of Art) Society in Utrecht together with other artists including Jan Kobell II. During this period he painted Time (1810 Amsterdam, Rijksmus.), a symbolical representation of a naked and winged old man in a strongly Neo-classical style. His work consists mainly of portraits, family groups and people conversing Wonder also painted interior scenes in imitation of the Dutch 17th-century masters.
