Pair of Chinese pith paintings of an Emperor

This is an extremely fine pair of antique Chinese gouache paintings on pith paper displayed inside silk covered mounts within narrow black frames. The paintings are believed to date from the early to mid 19th century with the framing probably dating a little later in the late 19th or early 20th century.
The younger man wearing a plain tunic over an elaborately embroidered robe and holding a sword in his left hand is believed to represent the Emperor Daoguang (1782 - 1850) who was the seventh Emperor of the Qing Dynasty and ruled from 1820 to 1850. The second painting depicts an older man with a white beard, wearing a conical feathered hat and an a exquisite wide collared robe embroidered with a phoenix. This man may be a high ranking dignitary in the Qing Court.
Dimensions:
Old man - frame 27.7 x 17.7 cm, mount window 16.5 x 9 cm
Emperor - frame 28 x 17.9 cm, mount window 16.5 x 9 cm
Condition: These are fine quality paintings but as is often the case there are splits and warping of the paper as shown in the photographs. Both have also had repairs to the pith paper outside the image before they were framed also adding to the evidence that the paintings pre-date the frames by some time. The frames show some age-related surface marks and scratches. Please contact David by using the enquiry form or phoning 07931 370372 if you would like to see additional photographs or require more information.
Postage & packing: £8 within the UK. Please contact us for a quote if you are an international buyer.
