Orlando Greenwood RBA 1892-1989 1960s Pastel
We are offering for sale this unusual pastel by the artist Orlando Greenwood, whose studio stamp is on the reverse of the pastel. We have tried to photograph the stamp as you will see, but it is dark green on dark paper, so it was quite difficult. The drawing depicts a girl with long brown hair, embracing a bust or cast of the head of a white horse. She is wearing a blue dress.
Orlando Greenwood 1892-1989, was born in Nelson, Lancashire in 1892. From the age of 13 he worked in his uncle's cotton mill, but in 1913, he commenced studying at Goldsmith's College School of Art in London. In 1914, he joined the Royal Engineers for service in WWI and resumed his studies in 1919.
He became known as the mill worker turned artist and painted still life, self portraits, landscapes etc. in oils, watercolours and pastels, in an eclectic range of styles. He also designed posters for London Underground and Great Western Railways, as well as advertisements for London department stores like Libertys.
He exhibited 1920-1933, at the Royal Academy (3 Paintings), Royal Society of British Artists (32), Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (1) and other London galleries.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1920 and a Full Member in 1922.
After WWII, when his house was bombed, he moved to the North, finally settling in Ulpha, Cumbria in 1967, the year he gave up painting. Ulpha is a small village in the Lake District National Park. He died in 1989 at the age of 97.
There are 12 of his paintings in the National Collection, see artUK.org.
