‘Negroes Dance Island of Dominica’ A Brunias 1779
This a rare and important original print after Agostino Brunias, titled ‘ A Negroes Dance in the Island of Dominica’. Depicting I believe a group of free people of colour, dancing and playing instruments under a coconut tree. This hand coloured stipple engraving is dedicated to Charles O’Hara and was published in London on the 15th of Feb 1779.
The engraving has been laid down onto board and is framed and glazed in a very attractive period maple frame. The engraving is 36cm x 31cm and the frame is 43cm x 37.5cm
Condition.
As you can see the sheet has been cut down to just outside the plate and this has been affixed to a wooden board. The engraving has quite heavy toning and some light foxing. There is some undulations to the surface mostly around the coconut tree.
