Mrs. F. T. Lines Botanical Watercolour Roses 1850
We are delighted to offer this superb Botanical Watercolour from a small collection of the work of Mrs. F. T. Lines, who has signed the watercolour underneath on the backing card.. The painting depicts a group of flowers containing a pink convolvulus, a cornflower and three rosa rugosa, probably alba. We are also listing another botanical watercolour by this artist, similarly mounted and framed.
After some research, we have discovered the Frederick T. Lines was an artist and teacher, who was a master in the use of watercolours. It is quite likely that Mrs. F. T. Lines is his wife Sarah, so these wonderful watercolours were painted by her. Although young ladies of this period were taught to paint, sew and play the piano, they could well be by her, after further tuition by her husband..
Frederick Thomas Lines (26 July 1808 – 10 April 1898) was an English portrait painter in addition to experimenting in studies from nature and landscape. Lines was known to be a master of the medium of watercolour.
He was tutored in drawing by his father. Lines travelled to London to train as a portraitist with artist Richard Evans (1784–1871), who was employed as an assistant to work in the studio of Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769–1830).
Lines taught drawing at Edwin Hill's Bruce Castle School in Tottenham and later returned to Birmingham to assist his father in his academy of arts.
Lines frequently exhibited at the Royal Society of Arts, in addition to the Royal Academy in London and the Birmingham Society of Arts (now known as the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists ), joining in 1837.
He was married to Sarah Breedon Butler, and they had two children, Frances Elizabeth and Frederick Joseph Butler Lines, the latter of whom also showed artistic talent like his father. The family lived in Handsworth, then in Staffordshire.
After Sarah died in early 1884, Frederick himself died in 1898, leaving his estate of £8,346, to be divided between his son and daughter. This qas a considerable sum of money in those days, but he was also a property owner, some of which came from his wife's mother, who lived with them for some time.
There are 3 of his works in the National Collection.
The painting is double mounted with wash lines and is framed in a 1 1/2 inch mottled gilt frame. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.

Frame size: 19 3/4 x 17 7/8 inches - 50.15cm x 45.45cm
