Large Blue and White Dutch Delft Wall Plaque c1850
In General
A very large, blue and white decorative, and impressive, hand-painted, Dutch Delft Wall Plaque of an enchanting ice skating scene c.1850. It is a dramatic piece of tin-glazed earthenware and is in the style of a polychrome skating scene by Royal Tichelaar Makkum.
The plaque is in a Cartouche shape with a ribbon moulded edge and a faux marble effect border.
The central panel shows a magical skating scene. In terms of social history it is fascinating to see that at that time, people would be taken across the ice in a plumed horse-drawn swan-shaped sleighs! There is comedy at the front of the panel where an ice skater has slipped over on the ice!

Condition
In good antique condition. There are some small glaze chips typical of Delft. There is an area of missing paint and glaze on the rear of the plaque which has been re-applied in part. There are two large chips below this area where a piece of pottery has been re-applied which is solid. There is another larger chip on the rear and some pottery loss on the rear edge. However, the two large chips and pottery loss to the rear are not visible when the plaque is hanging.
