We are delighted to list this wonderfully executed Orientalist Watercolour by the artist J. Schmidt, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 34 for 1934. The painting depicts an oriental harbour scene, with a small dhow or felucca pulled up against the edge of the water, with a load of jars and baskets. There is a mosque behind it, with an enclosed over hanging balcony over the water and its minaret reaching up to the sky.. We can't help enthusing over this painting, which, in our opinion, is equal in quality to those of Noel H. Leaver. We have already listed another slightly smaller Orientalist watercolour by this artist.

Surprisingly, considering the quality of the works, we have only been able to find one other work by this artist to have come to the market in recent years in this country, so cannot offer any biographical information about him or her, and, as we do not even know the Christian name, and there are many Schmidts, it has been so far a fruitless search.

However, the painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard to complement, and is newly framed in a bronzed frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
