Great painting signed A. Mazza portrait of a woman

An elegant Italian oil painting on canvas—retaining its original canvas—signed and dated "A. Mazza 1912" and attributable to the Milanese painter Aldo Mazza (1880–1964). The painting depicts a young woman wrapped in a luminous, Oriental-style drape it is a work of remarkable painterly quality and great decorative appeal.
The figure dominates the composition, distinguished by her sinuous pose and lively expression. Her slightly tilted head, parted lips, and arm extended downwards suggest a graceful, dance-like movement. The rendering of the drapery—the work's true chromatic protagonist—is particularly successful. Golden yellow and orange tones are enlivened by red motifs and lighter passages, featuring delicate grey-green nuances. The folds follow the figure's contours through a series of fluid brushstrokes, capturing the fabric's softness and the way light plays across its surface. The background, composed of understated beige and grey tones, allows the luminosity of the garment and the delicacy of the skin tones to stand out vividly.
Aldo Mazza was a Milanese painter and illustrator. Trained at the Brera Academy under Cesare Tallone, he combined painting with extensive work in illustration and caricature, notably collaborating for many years with the publication Guerin Meschino. His depictions of women combine a solid academic foundation with a keen focus on expressiveness, color, and compositional impact—qualities clearly evident in this piece.
The painting is set within an ornate Baroque-style frame featuring scrolls and foliate motifs. The frame shows signs of wear and some areas of loss (see photos).
Given its impressive size, the work is ideally suited for a drawing room, a study, or a grand entrance hall. The liveliness of the attire and the elegance of the figure allow it to fit seamlessly into both classic and contemporary interiors, where it can serve as a focal point on the wall. The painting has already undergone restoration, with minor color touch-ups overall, it is in good condition.
