Introduction
A highly detailed Victorian oil painting by Oliver Clare depicting pink and white blossom, moss and woodland foliage surrounding a bird’s nest containing four blue eggs.
Clare’s finely controlled technique creates considerable depth and texture within this intimate composition.

The subject is particularly characteristic of Clare.
Historical records document numerous paintings combining flowers, nests and eggs upon mossy banks. Several measure 8 × 10 inches, corresponding with the historic Haynes Fine Art dimensions recorded for this painting.
The Bird’s Nest and Four Blue Eggs
The blue colouring and clutch size are suggestive of European Starling eggs, although the identification remains tentative.
The Artist
Oliver Clare was associated particularly with Birmingham and belonged to an artistic family that included his father George Clare and brother Vincent Clare.
He became known for meticulously finished paintings of flowers and fruit, frequently placing his subjects upon moss-covered banks.
