Good Victorian Walnut Chesterfield Sofa c.1880
The quality carcass upholstered in rose pink coloured button-back velvet velour with antique slub, the whole sitting on ring turned walnut front legs and sabre rear legs, the carcass stamped H.V.(?) within an oval (concealed) and numbered ‘2167’ to one rear leg, the whole on later brass castors survives from late Victorian period England.
The jewel coloured upholstery is mid twentieth century, and in pretty good shape with some minor wear, and we have administered a full clean to the whole. There is one small area of loss worn through on the middle front section around 3cms wide. The sofa does not require any attention and is ready to use. We have given it the once over mechanically and cosmetically so she is plump, refreshed and springy and we have tightened the joints and the castors run freely.
Chesterfield sofas share a complex history, alongside the elite, the privileged and aristocrats. History reveals that these types of couches have been commonly used in the confines of old institutions, government buildings and luxurious homes for generations. A room, in the 1900’s, would not be complete, unless the master owns a Chesterfield sofa.
Gorgeous, and although timeless, very much on trend.
