George VI Silver Egg Cup, E.Hill, B'ham, 1944
This is a distinguished looking George VI Sterling Silver Egg Cup. The egg cup is urn shaped with a short pedestal stem and round foot and a pie crust top rim. The initials A.R. are smartly engraved on the side of the body.
The egg cup is made in Birmingham by silversmith E. Hill and dates to 1944. Silver was a restricted material during World War II and wartime silver is comparatively rare. If an item was particularly required, possibly for a Christening in the case of this egg cup, then the customer would often bring some old silver items, frequently spoons, to be melted down and recast into the desired item.
Condition is very good with just one truly tiny ding in the body below the hallmark and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The egg cup stands 6.6cm / 2.6ins high and is 5.9cm / 2.3ins in diameter across the top rim. It weighs in at a very respectable 36.2g / 1.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter U for 1944 and the E H in conjoined circles makers' mark for the silversmith E. Hill.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
