George V Silver Quail's Egg Cup, Birmingham, 1933
This is an unusual George V small Sterling Silver Egg Cup for holding a Quail's Egg. These are rarely seen as the the rather refined practice of a soft boiled quail's egg for breakfast never gained widespread favour! There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The egg cup was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Deykin & Harrison and dates to 1933. William Deykin and Walter Harrison registered their first mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1895. Operating from premises in Jennens Row, they produced a very broad range of silverware for use in the study, on the table, for personal use and for around the home. They remained in business up until the late 1930s.
Condition is good, with just a little misshaping around the foot and a couple of truly tiny dings in the top rim plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The egg cup stands 5.8cm / 2.3ins tall and is 3.3cm / 1.3ins in diameter. It weighs in at 14.4g / 0.51oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, just below the top rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham the date letter J for 1933 and the D & H makers' mark for Deykin & Harrison.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
