Fine Quality 19th C. Gilt Plaster Picture Frame

A Fine and Impressive Antique Picture Frame
English, c.late 19th century.
By the maker Samuel Thomas Townshend of Charing Cross, Norwich.
(A notable framer, listed in the Furniture History Society archives).
Gilt plaster with stylised repetitive acanthus moulding and bead-bordered.
Fitted with the original two-piece slip.
A completely authentic, unrestored, unmolested high-quality frame by a decent Norwich maker.
Original makers label still in place and bridging the main body of the frame and the slip.
Original gilding throughout.
Exceptional, authentic patina - a lovely old, jaded, mellow 'glow' you can only get from gilding that is 100+ years old!
A very decent example of its kind e and very worthy of minor restoration to bring it back into full contention.
Use this frame for 19th century landscapes or portraits in oil.....alternatively would take a nice piece of old mirror glass with grace and style.
Please check the size of your artwork prior to purchase. The slip is stepped and in two pieces, either or all could be removed if desired, however, please note the original maker's label (rare to still have in place) bridges one section of the slip, as shown, and this would be broken if the slip is removed.
A very lovely frame.
Approx Dimensions -
Overall 28.5 x 24.5 inches
Sight size 20 3/8ths x 16 4/8ths
Rebate of the slip 21 x 17 inches
Rebate of the frame proper (ie without the slip): 24 x 20 inches.
Condition -
Fair - good for age. Original old gilding throughout. Could be used as is, or restored to a level to suit your needs. A few fragments of plaster are away, revealing the white beneath. This is clearly shown in the photos. These could be touched in with gilt, or, if you're more exacting, could be carefully remodelled. Some discolouration to the sides (one in particular - the upper surface) where it has been catching the dirt over many years. Fine cracking to the plaster in places, entirely typical of the type and age and not deemed an issue.
