F.Bartolozzi RA Engraving aft.Angelica Kauffman RA
We are offering for sale this elegant, neo-classical stipple engraving by the famous Italian engraver Francesco Bartolozzi after the work of Angelica Kauffman. The engraving depicts a bevy of frolicking putti with a goat and a satyr.
Francesco Bartolozzi was born in Florence on 2nd September 1727, the son of a gold and silversmith. He had so much artistic talent that rather than follow the profession of his father, he trained for 3 years under two Florentine artists and then travelled to Venice to study engraving.
He moved to London in 1764 and lived there for nearly 40 years, where he produced a huge quantity of engravings, a large number of them being from the works of Cipriani and Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807), as is this example.
He was appointed engraver to King George III shortly after arriving in London, was elected a founding Member of the Royal Academy in 1768. He took many pupils during his stay in London, but in 1802 accepted the post of Director of the Royal Academy in Lisbon, where he died on 7th March, 1815. His son Stefano was also an engraver.
The engraving has been expensively linen mounted with gilt insert and is framed in a 5/8" bronze frame to suit. It was be supplied wired and ready to hang.
