Edwin Ellis RBA Lge Watercolour Seaweed Gatherers Edwin Ellis RBA 1842-1895 %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer for auction this large watercolour by the English artist EDWIN ELLIS R.B.A. 1842-1895, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a coastal view with a group of villagers heading back from their work gathering seaweed. There is a cart piled high with seaweed and pulled by two heavy horses, with two figures in attendance. In the foreground are three figures, a man, woman and a child. The man is carrying a bundle of sticks, possible brooms or rakes over his shoulder. The setting seems to be a bay with some rolling hills in the background which appear to go right down to the sea. There are some low buildings clustered beneath the hill to the far left.

Unlike his impressionistic style when painting in oils, the artist's watercolours are much more detailed and his figure work is excellent.

Edwin Ellis was born in Nottingham in 1842, where he first worked in a lace factory, which belonged to his father Thomas Ellis. He and his father gave up the lace manufacturory in 1864. He studied under Henry Dawson and settled in London in the 1860s. According to Graves Dictionary, he exhibited 25 paintings at the Royal Academy, 99 at Suffolk Street and 21 at various other London Exhibitions. The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood states that he was known as a marine and landscape painter and that he painted mostly coastal views in Yorkshire, Cornwall and Wales. In 1893, a comprehensive exhibition of his work was held at Nottingham Museum with 80 of his paintings which was well received and written about in the press.

He was married to Catherine A. Ellis, although we haven't been able to trace his actual marriage year, but in the Census of 1871, he was visiting Charles Dixie in Hastings with his wife. By 1881, the were living in New Way, Godalming, Surrey, which must have been quite a large house, as they had 5 children living with them and two servants. In 1891, he and his son Bert (Bertie Leigh Ellis, born 1872) were living at 76 Newman Street, London and they were both listed as artists and marine painters. Bertie exhibited 1890-1892 and is listed in the Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club). He exhibited 7 painting at the RBA.

We can find no exact death date for edwin, nor his actual birth record, nor can we find any information on any of his children or his wife after the 1881 Census, with the exception of Bert, who we found in the 1911 Census living in Clapham, London with his wife Marie and listed as a an artist painter.

Edwin also exhibited 5 paintings at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 1 at the Glasgow Institute, 4 at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham, 19 at the Manchester City Art Gallery, 2 at the Royal Hibernian Academy, and 1 at the Royal Scottish Academy. His auction results are to be found at artprice.com (243), artnet.com (96) findartinfo.com(91). His highest auction price achieved for one painting being £3585, for an oil painting in 2004.

He was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1875 and a Member of the Nottingham Society of Artists in 1885.

The painting has not been mounted due to its size, but is newly framed and glazed in a 3 1/2 inch ornate frame, which complements the painting very well.
