Edwardian Silver Specimen Vase, Chester, 1908
This is an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Specimen Vase. The vase has a circular base, weighted for stability, a tapered stem and a trumpet top with a wavy rim.
The specimen vase was made by silversmiths Martin, Hall & Co and assayed in Chester in 1908. The firm was founded by Richard Martin and brothers Ebenezer & Joshua Hall in 1854 as the successor to Roberts & Hall, in which Ebenezer had been a partner. The company manufactured in Sheffield and had showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia. They participated in many international exhibitions and won a number of awards. The firm went into decline with the economic downturn of the 1930s and had ceased trading by 1936.
Condition is fair to good with just a little misshaping to the rim of the base and a few shallow dings in the tapering stem. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vase stands 14.1cm / 5.5ins high and is 5.7cm / 2.2ins across the top rim. It weighs in at 49.8g / 1.75oz, which does of course include the weighting material in the base.
The hallmarks, at the top of the stem, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter H for 1908 and the R M over E H in a diamond makers' mark for Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall of Martin, Hall & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
