An extremely rare 1930's 22 piece hand painted tea service from Pearl Pottery for Lawleys department store, endorsed and signed 'Edna Best'. All pieces are free from chips, cracks and crazing, but being hand painted in the early 1930's, there are a few tiny paint flecks. These wares were also painted over 'seconds' with thickly applied paintwork and dark honeyglaze to hide any imperfections.
Lawleys department store wanted their own range of pottery wares to compete with the popular Clarice Cliff. To add importance to the range which was produced by Pearl Pottery Burslem, they reached an agreement with Hollywood stage and screen star Edna Best to include her signature on the base of each piece. Crudely painted and a little rough around the edges, they are however now rare and sought after. All pieces are in fantastic vintage condition with no restoration or overpainting guaranteed. Please see the photos as they form part of the description. A few pieces do not carry the Edna Best signature but all are part of the same set.
