Cottage garden Oil by Robert Noble RSA oil painting Scottish Robert Noble %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A stunning oil on board by the highly regarded Scottish artist Robert Noble RSA PSSA 1857-1917. The painting depicts the most beautiful scene of a cottage garden in full bloom at the height of summer. The work is a later work for the artist and shows his great skill at using, and not over using the paint to represent light and colour, each flower is represent but with the most swift flick of a paint brush, that only the most confident of artists can manage.
Robert Noble was born at Edinburgh on 27 January 1857. He was apprenticed at 14 to an Edinburgh lithographer but he also worked with his older cousin James Campbell Noble in his Picardy Place studio while taking the by then established route to the Trustees’ School on the Mound and RSA Life Class (where James Campbell Noble was one of his teachers). Spells in Paris at the Carolus-Duran studio changed his output form figurative to landscape subjects. By the late 1880s, had made East Linton his home. He was to remain there the rest of his life (although for a considerable period he kept the Picardy Place studio, if only as an accommodation address). Robert Noble became the central figure of the band of artists working out of East Linton. In 1891 the Society of Scottish Artists formed and Noble became their first president. He became ARSA in 1892, RSA 1903, being admitted RA in 1903. He exhibited widely, achieving a bronze medal from the Paris International Exhibition of 1900, and was widely admired for his skill, impartiality and tact on the RSA Hanging Committee.Robert Noble died very suddenly at his home, The Neuk, Prestonkirk, on 12 May 1917.
This painting by Noble has a typical feel of the beauty of Scotland that his work represents. The work is signed to the bottom left and is mounted in the original gilt frame. C.1910
