Arthur Perigal RSA Watercolour Scottish Scene 1851

We are delighted to offer for sale this early watercolour by the Scottish artist ARTHUR PERIGAL JR., who has signed the painting with his monogram AP in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1851. The painting depicts a rural Scottish landscape, with an angler sitting on the bank of a fast flowing burn and his wife walking down the slope towards him, from a cottage at the top of the hill. There is a small stone bridge crossing the burn.
ARTHUR PERIGAL JR. 1816-1884, was the son of Arthur Perigal Senior (1784-1847) also an Edinburgh artist who painted portraits, miniatures and historical scenes. His son, however, was a landscape painter and established himself from a young age. He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Scottish Academy at the young age of twenty five and a Full Member in 1868. He was also elected a Member of the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society in 1878 and was appointed Treasurer in 1880. He died in Edinburgh in 1884.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1861-1884, also Royal Scottish Academy, the British Institution, Glasgow Institute, Manchester City Art Gallery and Suffolk Street. All of his titles at the RA were Scottish landscapes, but he worked in Italy in the 1840s and 1870s and also painted some scenes of Hampstead in London.
Auction results achieved for works by this artist may be found at artprice.com (133 listings), findartinfo.com (48), artnet.com (57) and arcadja.com (46). The record price for one of his watercolours in recent years is £6,400.
