This superb Royal Venton ware dinner service features a striking Art Deco pattern designed by Harold Holdcroft, a well-known and highly regarded ceramic artist of the period. The pattern would have been done between 1929 thru 1933, and several of the pieces are marked with Holdcroft’s signature along with the factory stamp and number codes. Beautifully detailed, the clean lines and bold bright colors of the pattern reflect typical Art Deco styling. Aside from one or two minor chips to the undersides and a very small amount of crazing, the set is in excellent condition for its age. The service is a set of 12, with several covered serving dishes, a gravy pitcher and 5 graduating platters, the 2 smallest being of the same size. The dinner plates have a 10 in – 25.5 cm, with the largest platter 17 in – 43 cm wide. We can supply additional measurements of any of the pieces on request, as well as photos.
Harold Holdcroft (1904-1982). The missing work period is from 1929 until 1933 and contains many bold and innovative designs of china dinnerware, tableware, vases and elephant novelty ware. The pottery is marked "Royal Venton Ware - J Steventon & Sons Ltd - Burslem - England - Hand Painted with the H Holdcroft signature." Harold Holdcroft is more popularly known for his years as Art Director at Royal Albert Bone China and for designing the world famous 1962 pattern “Old Country Roses”, which has sold over 100 million pieces worldwide. These early designs give a new insight into the man and also his possible influence as a peer and teacher to many of the students who studied at Burslem School of Art and later established international reputations such as Clarice Cliff, Susie Cooper, Charlotte Rhead and Gladys Scarlett.
