Antique Papier Mache Writing Box - Dated 1844
A simply fabulous early Victorian writing slope or lap desk made from paper mache, lacquered and hand decorated. Even the underside is beautifully hand painted with slight wear.
The top is an absolute joy, including a prominent Peacock, a Bird of Paradise above an ornamental fountain.
There is a push button to the front which when engaged opens the box to reveal a totally original interior. The writing surface retains it's original red velvet with embossed border. The top of the box has an original Moroccan leather Portfolio, this in turn lifts to reveal a compartment with the original paper lining and a presentation label dated 1844.
A superb and highly collectible box in superb condition (minor wear commensurate with age). While closed, the box measures 12" x 9" x 1 1/4".
