Antique Oak Font With A Fine Inset Silvered Bowl
An octagonal Arts & Crafts antique oak font with a fine inset silvered bowl covered by a lid and a deeply carved acanthus, rosette and vine frieze set above eight arcaded panels, supported on a column resting on a spreading ogee base. One of the panels bears a commemorative plaque the dedication of which says:
" To the Glory of God. This font was gifted to Newington United Free Church, Edinburgh by Miss Alison Telford on the 16th January 1924, her eightieth birthday. She was the first girl baptised in this church 1844 ".
Scottish, early 20th century.
Provenance: Newington United Free Church, now the Queen's Hall, Clerk Street, Edinburgh
Notes: The Queen’s Hall has been at the heart of music making in Edinburgh since 1979 when, after a public appeal, the Church of Newington and St Leonards was bought and converted into a 900 seat concert hall . Since then it has become known internationally as the setting for the much loved Edinburgh International Festival Morning Concerts and an ideal space for chamber music.
