Antique Chronograph Fusee Pocket Watch, 1891. A Fabulous Centre Seconds Chronograph Fusee Pocket Watch by Joel Herbert Wolfe of Manchester 1891 %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A fabulous “Centre Seconds Chronograph” silver fusee pocket watch, by watchmaker, jeweller, and silversmith, Joel Herbert Wolfe, of 29 Oldham Street, in Manchester’s city centre, (then Lancashire), where this watch would have been made.

Born in Manchester, 1853, Joel Herbert Wolfe had an interesting life. He followed his father, Shreiner Wolfe (of German descent), into antique clock and watchmaking, where records indicate that his father had sadly passed away by the time Joel had reached just 8 years old, being subsequently raised by his English born mother, Matilda, who continued to run the family’s Jewellery outlet at 95 Dale Gardens, on the outskirts of Manchester, following Shreiner’s demise.

Wolfe did not use his first name to sign his hand-made watches such as this fine example, being widely and commonly known as Herbert, and having qualified as a watchmaker and silversmith, eventually commenced his own watchmaking and antique jewellery business at Oldham Street, Manchester from c1876, whilst residing at 182 Cheetham Hill Road, Dukinfield, Manchester. By 1881, Wolfe, now married to Ellie from Great Yarmouth, was living at 32b Upper Brook Street, Manchester, the couple having a young daughter and son.

By 1894, Wolfe had moved again, this time to 3 Park Wood (Victoria Park) Moss Side, Manchester. He would now have been in his 41st year and described himself in a local business directory as being a watchmaker, Jeweller, and silversmith, the indication being, that his business was flourishing at the time. However, by the 1901, it appears that Wolf and his family had relocated to London, the census recording that he was now living at the affluent address of Westhaven, Shooters Hill, Hampstead, London, with wife Ellie and their son Reginald. What’s even more interesting is that is occupation was given as "Australian Mining Merchant.”

It is known that Wolfe’s wife Ellie, passed away in 1921 at Barton upon Irwell, east Manchester, indicating that the couple had eventually moved back to his city of birth, yet that wasn’t the last move Joel was to make, because it is recorded that he passed away in 1924, aged 71, at his seaside home of 73 St. Asaph Street, Rhyl, Denbighshire, North Wales, his occupation being was given as: “Retired jeweller and mining merchant.”

Hallmarked Chester 1891, this substantial chronograph has a gold start/stop slide button with white enamelled dial, gold main hands and blued sweep centre second’s hand. The dial has black Roman hour numerals and 0-300 chronograph scale Arabic numerals. The Wolfe signed fusee movement with engraved Liverpool Arrow Marks, has a three-quarter plate, compensated balance, and ruby end stone. The case maker was Isaac Jabez Theo Newsome, (IJ.T.N) of The Butts, Coventry, and the case and movement serial numbers are the same, “115031”, which is also replicated on the dial face.

The watch comes securely packed with a winding key, together with instructions on how to wind and set the watch time.
