A pair of large 19th century Carrara Marble Italian garden sculptures of playful Putti riding and cavorting with Billy Goats, holding aloft bunches of grapes and garlands of vine leaves and standing on rusticated bases mounted on the original plinths decorated with egg and dart cornice tops and moulded bases.
Italian, mid 19th century.

Provenance: Purportedly to have been originally in the grounds of the Rushbrooke Hall Estate, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk a moated stately home with a large ornamental garden which was owned for many years by the Jermyn family. In 1938 the estate was taken over by Victor, the 3rd Lord Rothschild (1910-1990) and in 1961 it was decided to demolish and rebuild the house. During the demolition, a fire devastated the building and the moated site and some of the formal gardens are all that remain. The Rothschild family continued in ownership of the estate until it was sold in 2015.
