A Pair Of Gillows Shell Back Hall Chairs


An Outstanding Pair Of Gillows shell back Hall Chairs. Raised on reeded sabre legs with panel seats and beautifully carved shell backs and painted inscription, around a sunburst, in Latin which reads "Propositi Tenax" which roughly translates as " Never Quit". In very good and original condition. 850mm high, 390mm wide and 470mm deep. English. Circa 1815.

One of a pair of identical chairs is illustrated in Susan E Stuarts books "Gillow of Lancaster and London 1730-1840" plate 177 (page 203) and made in 1811 for The Reverend Holland Edwards of Pennant Conway North Wales W J Gravener Antiques is a family owned business, started in 1963 by William who was joined by son, Mark in 1981 and continues today with the same ethos of dealing in fine quality English and Continental furniture, mirrors and decorative objects, from the 18th & 19th centuries.
