A Handmade Glazed Pottery Baby Elephant 1928
This superb and very cute glazed pottery sculpture depicts a baby elephant in a seated position. It is a one-off bespoke piece, modelled in thick heavy clay with very good detail.
The artist has captured a very natural pose, with good movement in the limbs, trunk, and ears, and a lovely expression on its face.
The skin is highly detailed, with numerous creases and wrinkles.
This very appealing sculpture is signed and dated, W Bates 1928.
The sculpture is in perfect condition but does have a few small light firing cracks produced in the kiln during its manufacture, as a result of the thickness of the clay.
