2 x Silver Rimmed Cut Glass Salts, Chester, 1909
This is an elegant pair of Edwardian Cut Glass Open Salts with Sterling Silver rims. The salts have a 10 sided pattern of strawberry diamond cuts around the bodies with a star cut base on the pedestal feet. The silver rims are plain.
The salts were made by silversmiths J & R Griffin and assayed in Chester in 1909. Brothers Joseph & Richard Griffin founded their firm in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter in 1895 but a large percentage of their work was assayed in Chester. They made a wide range of silverware before they ceased trading in 1926.
Overall condition is good, with no chips or cracks in the glass but there is a dent in the silver rim on one of the salts. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each salt is 5.2cm / 2ins in diameter and stands 3.6cm / 1.4ins high. The pair together weigh in at 127.5g / 4.5oz.
The hallmarks on the rims are slightly rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the script date letter I for 1909 and the J & R G makers' mark for J & R Griffin.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
