19th century watercolour seascape by Bush Hardy
A dynamic snapshot of the coast off Calais in the latter part of the 19th century, painted by Thomas Bush Hardy in his distinctive style, the turbulent and wintery Chanel conditions being captured brilliantly (anyone who has travelled the modern ferry across the water on an overcast and blowy day will recognise the scene). Hardy lived with his family in Boulogne between 1877 and 1880. This Northern French town is only 25 miles from Calais which meant this coastline was used for a lot of Hardy's artistic works in the late 1870s and into the 1880s.

Watercolour, Framed, signed . in good condition, a few age spots ( the photos have been taken in hi resolution ,please zoom in to inspect) it is ready to hang, the frame is not of the period, but was reframed in the latter part of the 20th century.

Thomas Bush Hardy RBA 1842 - 1897. Marine painter and watercolourist. Born in Sheffield, traveled in Holland and Italy. Exhibited at SS 1871-97 (elected RBA 1884), RA and NWS. Hardy's prolific coastal scenes his paintings in fresh and vivid colours, achieved enormous popularity and is recognised as a sought after artist Buchanan and Laing Galleries are a private client business.
