1930s Catalin Silette Chess set Chess Catalin Silette %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This particular Chess set design is important, it embraced the Art Deco era, the new manufacturing and materials of the early 20th century whilst remaining true to the heritage of chess pieces by the simple device of re imagining of the classic Staunton figures in silhouette, hence the name SILETTE, it was manufactured by Grays of Cambridge (England) . Grays (founded in 1855 by rackets champion Henry J Gray) and were and remain a leading supplier of sports and games equipment and have the enviable position of still being family run.

The chessmen are represented as two-dimensional silhouettes of the Staunton design mounted atop circular discs, the top and base are fixed by a metal pin. They are fabricated from semi-translucent honey/ butterscotch colour and Black Catalin, the 'white' pieces have a subtle marbling the black are solid.

The King stands 2-3/4" tall and the pawn is 1-3/8th inches.

The 32 pieces are in their original dovetailed mahogany box marked " Silette Chess made by Grays of Cambridge. " The set dates to the 1930s when Catalin was used as an alternative to Bakelite. The chessmen are all in excellent condition. Please note the original box has lost one of the top edges to the slide rail, it doesn't stop the box being used but the top sliding panel wont be locked in when closed.

Historical note:
The invention of Catalin revolutionised the manufacture of plastics during the Twenties and Thirties. When the Bakelite patent expired in 1927, the Catalin Corporation of New York City and began producing a similar material under the name "Catalin". A new colouring method allowed them to add fifteen colours to the available range. Catalin, in fluid form, could be easily moulded, and colour added during the manufacturing process to create swirling marble effects. Catalin was also used in the production of radio sets and antique jewellery a suitable medium for the new Art Deco style
