1860 Fusee Drop Dial Timepiece by Allen Colyer.
SUMMER SALE OFFER PRICE:
We offer for consideration, this exceptional fusee drop dial timepiece by Allen Colyer of Witham, Essex.
Born 1822 in Dover, Kent, Colyer is recorded as living at Balding Road, Dover with his parents until the mid-1850’s. He then relocated to Witham and set-up his own watch, antique clock making and antique jewellery operation working from Newland Street. (It is documented that he worked from a yard and sales outlet located within the immediate boundary grounds of the Spread Eagle Inn at 49 Newland Street, a site and building that still exists today). Colyer remained at this location until retirement in c1904, before passing away in 1909 at West Ham, Essex, aged 86.
The superbly hand-crafted cabinet work includes a solid Mahogany turned roundhead face over a flamed Mahogany veneered drop box. The antique clocks embellishment includes a shaped and glazed front visible pendulum aperture with brass surround and its original hand-carved Acanthus designed side-ears. There is also a hinged door for pendulum access to the side of the case and a later replacement ‘hook and eye’ catch hinged regulator door to the bottom of the box.
The original metal dial has black painted Roman numerals and the Colyer details, finished with its original pair of blued Heavy Double Swell Spade hands secured with a pinned collet. The clocks face is then protected by a thick bevelled glaze mounted in its solid brass bezel.
The clock benefits from a quality 8-day single fusee chain driven movement with rectangular plates and turned pillars and comes with its original brass pendulum rod and bob plus its brass fusee winding key.
A fine example of high-quality mid-19th Century English clockmaking!
