1830's Bessarabia Transferware Plate by John Meir
#AD083: J. M. & S. John Meir Staffordshire Brown & White Transferware Pottery Plate
A classic 19th c. antique English pottery plate with a superb old Victorian embellished thick checkerboard trim. It depicts a beautiful pastoral scene of a young woman in the farmyard, feeding her sheep, ducks, birds, hens and a large turkey. A thatched roof house can be seen in the background. It is creamware and brown in colour, with 6 wonderful vignette scenes of 3 flowers and 3 cows as a running trim.
History of John Meir & Son Potteries: John Meir & Son were a family of manufacturers of earthenware at Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. John Meir Sr. worked by himself from c. 1812-1836 and with his son as John Meir & Son (mark J.M. & S) from circa 1837-97. They produced high quality ironstone and earthenware, which was widely sent to America. Their pottery ware was manufactured in the famous Greengates Pottery Works in Tunstall.
This piece is in wonderful condition. There are no cracks or repairs. Click images to see condition in very close up and movable views.
The graphic mark on reverse features the letters TP around a beautiful deep brown mark of the Royal Arms and the pattern name "Bess arabia" and JM & S. See photos. It also has embossed and deeply incised initials of DW and 71-31. The Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom is the official coat of arms of the British monarch.
This old original pastoral piece was recently found in Newton Abbot, Devon, England. A great and early Stoke-on-Trent historical piece. The transfer ware work on this 19th century piece is very graphic and stunningly complex. We believe it to be a rare pattern and example we could not find mentioned in any searches.
