17thC Antique Portrait Admiral Cloudesley Shovell Sir Godfrey
Follower of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723) - A Late 17th Century English School Antique Life Size Portrait of Rear Admiral Sir Cloudesly Shovell, Circa 1692, Offered in Attic Found Condition.

Untouched country house portraits are becoming harder to source.
This fine late 17th Century oil on canvas portrait of Sir Cloudesley Shovell has come straight from a Suffolk-based property and is currently in "attic found" condition. He lacks a frame, needs cleaning and has a tear in the canvas to his jacket pocket.
Background to the sitter:
Admiral of the Fleet Sir Cloudesley Shovell (c. November 1650 – 22 October or 23 October 1707), was an English naval officer. As a junior officer he saw action at the Battle of Solebay and then at the Battle of Texel during the Third Anglo-Dutch War. As a captain he fought at the Battle of Bantry Bay during the Williamite War in Ireland.
As a flag officer Shovell commanded a division at the Battle of Barfleur during the Nine Years' War and during the battle distinguished himself by being the first to break through the enemy's line. Along with Admiral Henry Killigrew and Admiral Ralph Delaval, Shovell was put in joint command of the fleet shortly afterwards.
During the War of the Spanish Succession Shovell commanded a squadron which served under Admiral George Rooke at the capture of Gibraltar and the Battle of Málaga. Working in conjunction with a landing force under the Earl of Peterborough his forces undertook the siege and capture of Barcelona. He was appointed commander-in-chief of the Navy while at Lisbon the following year. He also commanded the naval element of a combined attack on Toulon, base of the main French fleet, in coordination with the Austrian army under Prince Eugene of Savoy in the summer of 1707. His life was brought to an end in a disastrous shipwreck in the Isles of Scilly later that year. He also served as MP for Rochester from 1695 to 1701 and from 1705 until his death in 1707.
Artist:
The painting bears an old label (see second image). As with many paintings of the period, the attribution to Kneller is somewhat questionable. The Swedish portraitist Michael Dahl (1659-1743) is known to have painted Shovell. Another portrait by an unknown hand is in the ownership of Leicester Museum and Arts Service. A number of engravings also exist by accomplished engravers such as John Taylor Wedgewood which is in the ownership of the Hampton Court Collection.
We would have to term this portrait "Follower of Kneller", i.e. undertaken by an an unknown hand in the late 17th Century but influenced by Kneller.
Sir Godfrey Kneller, 1st Baronet (8 August 1646 – 19 October 1723) was the leading portrait painter in England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and was court painter to English and British monarchs from Charles II to George I. His major works include The Chinese Convert (1687 Royal Collection, London) a series of four portraits of Isaac Newton painted at various junctures of the latter's life a series of ten reigning European monarchs, including King Louis XIV of France over 40 "Kit-cat portraits" of members of the Kit-Cat Club and ten "beauties" of the court of William III, to match a similar series of ten beauties of the court of Charles II painted by his predecessor as court painter, Sir Peter Lely.
This is a good opportunity to buy a period portrait in untocuhed condition.
