Victorian Scottish Silver & Agate Plaid Brooch
We are offering for sale this lovely, compact, Scottish Silver (unmarked but tests as silver) and vari-coloured agates plaid Brooch with safety chain and pin. The brooch has a circular form with curved rim and has a raised, round central section, with two cornelian, or carnelian triangles and two bloodstone triangles, bisected by a chased silver St. Andrew's Cross or Saltire. The surround bears four half moons of vari-coloured agate surrounded by chased silver.
Plaid brooches were and are primarily used for attaching a fly plaid to the wearer's shoulder, but work equally well as decorative brooches or for holding scarves in place. Cornelian, bloodstone and agate are all mostly varieties of chalcedony and are all commonly found in Scottish antique jewellery of the Victorian and Early 20th Century periods. Scottish jewellery was popularised by Queen Victoria due to her love of Balmoral and all things Scottish.
Diameter: 1 3/8" - 3.5cm
Condition: Very good. There is a very slight compression to the silver rim of the brooch at the opposite end to where the safety chain is fixed and there appears to have been an old repair to the pin fixing at that end.
