Circa 1880, Victorian ‘Literary Machine’ (trademarked) by John Carter, London. Consisting of an occasional table (adjustable height) and adjustable reading arm (adjustable in height and width), held in place by brass rods. Standing on a cast iron base with foliate cast stem, and foliate cast animal foot. The label of ‘John Carter’s Patent Literary Machine – Trade Mark Registered – 6A New Cavendish St., Portland Place, London, W’ is to the back of the reading support.

John Carter was a Victorian inventor and cabinet maker and produced several designs of patented ‘Literary Machines’, operating out of his London premises.
