Smallest French & English Dictionary. C1890.
A fascinating English French dictionary deemed to be the smallest in the world. It is also an advertising book being sponsored by Pears Soap, or Pears Savon, as it also says on the cover.
It is in the original metal case which has a magnifying glass set into the front to help the reader and a hanging loop for attaching it to a chatelaine or chain.
In the book are the translations from French to English in the front half and English to French in the back half. At the very back is a page with a table titled
"A table of English coins, measures and weights"
Written in pen on the first page is "1895 ????? 2yrs. J.M."
I assume it was given as a present to J.M. aged 2 in 1895. I cannot decipher the other word.
It was published by David Bryce and Son of Glasgow and printed by Glasgow University Press. David Bryce and Son were famed for producing miniature books.
The condition is very good. There is rubbing and discolouration to the outside of the case but the inside is bright and clean. The case stays shut but does not "clip" shut. The book is in remarkable condition with minor corner flicks to a couple of pages and only one with an ink mark.
UK Special Delivery is included in the price.
