Sir Edward Massey in Oak Portrait

Antique English Civil War Gothic Revival Portrait Plaque – Colonel Sir Edward Massey in Oak & Fruitwood
Overview
A handsome carved oak and fruitwood wall plaque depicting Colonel Sir Edward Massey, Governor of Gloucester (1642) and later Governor of Sudeley Castle (1644) during the English Civil War.
Carved in the 19th century in a Gothic Revival style from earlier oak boards (very likely 18th century or earlier), it combines genuine age with a named historical figure, giving the piece strong period character and presence.
Design
The centre shows a bold high-relief profile of Massey with flowing hair, curled moustache and breastplate of armour, carved in warm-toned fruitwood that contrasts effectively with the darker, figured oak frame.
An architectural surround suggests castle masonry: a foliated arch, geometric side uprights, crenellated top edge and a lower arcade of small openings. The outer border carries the inscription:
“COLONEL EDWARD MASSEY – GOVERNOUR OF THE CITY OF GLOUCESTER 1642”
Across the top, in gilt lettering:
“GOVERNOR OF SUDELEY CASTLE 1644”
Below the bust hangs a heraldic shield with chevrons and roundels, with vigorous green-man / lion-mask carvings at the lower corners – classic Gothic Revival details.
Historical Note
Edward Massey (c.1619–1674) was a key Civil War commander, renowned for his defence of Gloucester in 1643 and later service as Governor of Sudeley Castle. Wounded at Worcester and imprisoned in the Tower, he eventually returned to the Royalist side. After the Restoration he was knighted and sat as MP for Gloucester.
This plaque commemorates his role and will appeal to collectors of English Civil War history, military portraiture and heraldic carving.
Style & Collecting Context
The carver is unknown, but the work clearly belongs to the 19th-century Gothic Revival tradition associated with architects such as Sir George Gilbert Scott: romantic historical heads framed by architectural niches, with heraldry and inscriptions evoking the “Age of Oak”.
Its mixture of old timber, Gothic ornament and a named sitter reflects the taste promoted by connoisseurs like Percy Macquoid and Victor Chinnery and remains attractive today to collectors and decorators seeking authentic “country-house” atmosphere.
Key Features
Genuine age: earlier oak boards with old tool marks and deep colour.
Named Civil War figure with a well-documented story.
Strong decorative scale: almost 70 cm high and around 6 kg.
Packed with detail: contrasting woods, heraldic shield, masks, gilt lettering.
Perfect over a fireplace, staircase, hall, library or study.

From an overseas private collection and a notable Channel Islands auction house later in the collection of Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. Offered as an antique decorative carved plaque of Colonel Sir Edward Massey. Buyers should study the photographs and rely on their own judgement.
